Introduction
Welcome! We are very glad that you are taking the time to introduce your company to Kmart. Our goal is to exceed our customers’ expectations in the form of value, quality, and style. Only through the development of strong supplier partnerships can this be obtained.
With our diverse store locations and Kmart’s strong presence in minority communities, we are committed to the development of growing o ur participation with minority owned businesses. Kmart’s Supplier Diversity initiatives will continue to provide an avenue for increased opportunities for minority business owners.
Our corporate strategy necessitates that all vendors have a clear understanding that we at Kmart have a fundamental business requirement to exceed the expectations for our customers, stores, business partners, and ultimately our shareholders. With that said, it is imperative that any new business proposal be centered on what type of strategic advantage your company can provide.
If you are up for that challenge, we invite you to proceed with the business proposal process. Please take time to review our basic business requirements and the preparation required to become a Kmart Vendor Partner.
Business Requirements (Merchandise Vendors)
In order to do business with Kmart we do have some basic business requirements of all our business partners. All business partners are required to adhere to Kmart’s policies regarding the following:
- Providing their Dun and Bradstreet Number
- Usage of Universal Product Codes
- Being in a good financial position
- Having EDI capabilities
- Provide a Certificate of Liability Insurance
Coverage must be placed with an insurance carrier rated not less than B+,VII by A.M. Best & Co. The insurance coverage must be Commercial General Liability (CGL) with coverage not less than:*policy limit minimum of $2,000,000 for Produc ts and Completed Operations Aggregate and *minimum of $2,000,000 for Each Occurrence.
* These limits may be met with a combination of primary and excess amounts. Coverage must be on an occurrence basis (not claims made). The policy must have an effective policy period of at least one year.
- Affirm your compliance with the following :
- OSHA standards
- EPA regulations
- Forced, prison, and illegal child labor laws. This includes manufactured products that your company represents
- SPACT (Home Land Security requirements)
- The ability to communicate electronically - must have web and e-mail accessibility, as it is our primary means of communicating with our vendor partner
- Complete Kmart’s Flammable Fabrics Act Agreement (if applicable)
- Complete Kmart’s Code of Conduct
- Provide a sample of your company’s invoice
- Complete Kmart’s Purchase Order Terms and Conditions Agreement
- Submit vendor contact information that includes e-mail addresses of contact persons
- Affirm that all new products are of good quality
Business Requirements (Service and Supply vendors)
Service and Supply vendors should proceed directly to the Vendor proposal process. Please be aware that you will be required to provide the following once an agreement has been made to do business with your company:
- Complete Kmart’s Code of Conduct
- Provide Federal Tax Id #
- The ability to communicate electronically - must have web and e-mail accessibility, as it is our primary means of communicating with our vendor partner
- Sample invoice with name of company identified, will be required.
Preparation
It is recommended that prospective vendors do some advance homework to determine if their product is a good match for Kmart. In order to learn about Kmart, it is recommended that a prospective vendor do the following:
- Visit several different Kmart stores to have a knowledge of our current product offerings
- Ask yourself, is my offering better or unique to what is currently being sold
- Does your product complement an existing product?
- Pricing structure needs to be appropriate to the Kmart customer; feel free to review similar products at Kmart for guidance
- What competitive advantage do your products offer to Kmart? Please make sure you take time to answer the questions above, before considering doing business with Kmart.
Under longstanding company policy, Kmart does not have any obligation to purchase any product or service unless a written PO is duly issued.
