4A’S MULTICULTURAL ADVERTISING INTERN PROGRAM (MAIP) CULMINATES WITH “THE FACE OF TALENT 2011” ALL-DAY SYMPOSIUM HONORING 139 STUDENT PARTICIPANTS
New York, N.Y. / July 28, 2011 / -The advertising industry has declared that finding and retaining the best talent is one of its biggest challenges. The 4A’s (American Association of Advertising Agencies), which provides leadership, advocacy and guidance to the industry, is helping to fill that need with its annual Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP).

The 4A’s will host “The Face of Talent” event, honoring the graduating MAIP Class of 2011, comprised of 139 students who are completing internships at 4A’s member agencies around the country, on Thursday, August 11 from 8:00am-5:00pm at the Edison Ballroom (240 West 47th Street, New York, NY).

Featured speakers will include Linda Sawyer, the CEO of Deutsch, A Lowe & Partners Company; Marc Strachan, Vice President, Multicultural Marketing, Diageo NA; and Bonita Coleman Stewart, Vice President, U.S. Sales, Google Inc. Presentations of awards at the symposium will include the Clarence Leroy Holte MAIP Intern of the Year Award; the ANA (Association of National Advertisers) Multicultural Scholarship Winner and the Pantheon Award. In addition, graduates’ resumes will be collected and published in a book available to members for future employment consideration (79 members of the MAIP Class 2011 have graduated and are looking to begin their careers).

MAIP candidates will have worked at 10-week paid summer internships in the areas of account management, art direction, copywriting, broadcast/print production, digital/interactive design, media planning/buying, project management, public relations and strategic/account planning.

Students are eligible to be selected as MAIP participants if they are: American Indian/Native American, Asian/Asian American or Pacific Islander, Black/African American, Latino/Hispanic, Multiracial or Multiethnic (e.g. Black and Hispanic). They must currently be a college junior, senior or graduate student, earning a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 out of 4 and demonstrate a serious commitment to pursuing a career in advertising, regardless of their chosen major.

“MAIP has provided 4A’s members with the opportunity to attract outstanding students to work with them for the summer,” said Nancy Hill, President-CEO, 4A’s. “Our MAIP students gain practical and hands-on experience. We provide them with insight into the areas of advertising that interest them and make graduates better prepared to find a full-time position upon graduation.”

This year, MAIP interns were assigned to 4A’s members agencies in the following cities:

New York; Chicago; Boston; Atlanta; Dearborn, MI; San Francisco; Los Angeles, Minneapolis; Austin; Boulder; Detroit; Durham, NC; El Segundo, CA; Irvine, CA; Kansas City, MO; Memphis, Parsippany, NJ; Pittsburgh; Portland, OR; Sausalito, St. Louis, Stamford and Warren, MI (see list of agencies that selected interns at end of release).

MAIP was established in 1973 to encourage racially and ethnically diverse students to consider working in advertising. It has jumpstarted the careers of more than 2,200 aspiring advertising professionals. In addition, The MAIP Alumni Association (MAA), the close-knit family of the program’s graduates, was established by Marc Strachan in 1981 and provides a nationwide network of alumni contacts, career-development assistance and guidance to past and present selectees. MAA newsletters and the online website MAIP Alumni Matters (http://maipalumnimatters.aaaa.org/) continues to serve as a resource. More information about MAIP can be found at http://www.aaaa.org/careers/internships/maip/Pages/default.aspx/.
