Who Gets Certified

8(a) Program
a business development program created to help small disadvantaged businesses compete in the American economy and access the federal procurement market.

HubZone Small Business
are those small businesses located in “historically underutilized” business zones (areas of high and persistent unemployment.) Not only must the business be located in one of these zones, but also be at least 35 percent of the employees must reside in a zone. Hub zones also includes lands within the external boundaries of an Indian reservation. To obtain HubZone status, a company must apply to the U.S. Small Business Administration and be certified as such

Minority Owned Business Enterprise
are businesses located in the United States that are 51% owned, controlled and operated by one or more minority group members. Minority group members are U.S. citizens who are Asian Americans, African Americans, Hispanic Americans and Native Americans

Service-Disabled Veteran Small Businesses
are those small businesses owned by one or more Veterans. To be further classified as Service-Disabled in accordance with 38 U.S.C. 101(2), the Veteran or Veterans must have a disability/ or disabilities that are Service connected as defined by 38 U.S.C. 101(16).

Small Business
a U.S. business, owned and operated by a U.S. citizen, that is smaller than a given size as measured by its employment, business receipts, or business assets as defined by the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Small Disadvantaged Business
a business that is at least 51 percent owned by one or more individuals who are both socially and economically disadvantaged. To qualify as a SDB, a company must receive a formal certification letter from the U.S. Small Business Administration.

Socially Disadvantaged
those individuals who have been subjected to racial or ethnic prejudice or cultural bias because of their identity as members of the following groups: Black Americans, Hispanic Americans, Native Americans, Asian Pacific Americans, Subcontinent Asian Americans and Members of other groups designated by the SBA.

Veteran-Owned Small Businesses
are those small businesses which are (1) 51 percent or more owned by one or more Veterans (as defined in 38 U.S.C. 101(2) or, in the case of any publicly owned business, 51 percent or more of the stock is owned by one or more veterans; and (2) the management and daily business operations are controlled by one or more Veterans.

Women-owned Small Business:
Women-owned Small Business means a small business concerns (a Which is at least 51 percent owned by one or more women or, in the case of any publicly owned business, at least 51 percent of the stock of which is owned by one or more women lb) Whose management and daily business operations are controlled by one or more women.
