MARYLAND STATE HIGHWAY ADMINISTRATION TO RECEIVE JAMES W. ROUSE EXCELLENCE IN DIVERSITY AWARD
BALTIMORE, MD- August 1, 2007/ -- DiversityBusiness.com-- The Maryland State Highway Administration (SHA) has been selected as one of two organizations to receive the Chesapeake Human Resources Association (CHRA) 2007 James W. Rouse Excellence in Diversity Award.

American Express CHRA established this award in 1996 to honor the late James W. Rouse, whose vision of building a better way to live and work through promoting diversity has been embodied in the many urban redevelopment programs for which he is nationally known.

The award is presented annually to CHRA member organizations in recognition of the innovative strategies they have implemented to advance the concept and spirit of diversity.

"We have long realized the importance of diversity both internally and in serving our customer base," said Maryland Department of Transportation Secretary John. D. Porcari. "I am pleased to see that SHA’s efforts have been rewarded with this very important recognition for the second time in just a few years."

The Diversity and Special Initiatives Division under the direction of Myneca Ojo, reports directly to SHA's Office of Administration, and has long counted on full SHA executive support for its initiatives. These include ensuring that all employees have full access to take mandatory diversity training; special emphasis (affinity) programs that promote cultures and peoples; recruitment initiatives; high school and college internship programs; mentoring programs; and the annual diversity conference.

Normetha Goodrum, Deputy Administrator for Finance, Information Technology and Administration for SHA, is accepting the award on behalf of the organization. She said, "I’m proud to work at SHA, and especially pleased at the organization’s commitment to diversity. That commitment starts at the very top with SHA Administrator Neil J. Pedersen. He makes certain that diversity is at the forefront of our action plans, and drives the message consistently throughout the organization."
