FirstEnergy Earns Excellence Award for Supplier Diversity

AKRON, Ohio, June 02, 2009 / DiversityBusiness.com /-- FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE) has been awarded the Edison Electric Institute's (EEI) 2009 Supplier Diversity Excellence Award. The award was presented Wednesday, May 27, during the EEI Supplier Diversity Conference and Awards Dinner in Phoenix, Arizona.
This award, which was first given in 1985, was created to recognize EEI member companies for their excellence and outstanding achievements in advancing purchasing opportunities for small businesses and businesses with diverse ownership. FirstEnergy is being recognized for the diversity of its supplier spending in 2008.
In the last two years, FirstEnergy and its employees have been recognized eight times for excellence in supplier diversity, receiving awards or honors from veterans groups, the Small Business Association, women-owned business groups and public utility commissioners.
"FirstEnergy has shown a consistent commitment to supplier diversity," said Deborah Matthews, Administrator of National Key Accounts and Supplier Diversity Services at EEI. "The company serves many areas in their three-state service territory with relatively low diversity statistics, but has successfully reached out to a broad and diverse network of suppliers to meet their needs for goods and services in a cost-effective manner."
Among other practices, FirstEnergy has established a supplier diversity advisory council to raise awareness of supplier diversity issues. Overall, the company's efforts led to a 32 percent increase in spending with small or diverse businesses from 2007 to 2008.
"We made a very concerted effort to increase the diversity of our suppliers - from putting together an advisory council to appointing champions in each area of Supply Chain to assure diversity was a priority," said Brad Tobin, vice president of Supply Chain for FirstEnergy. "This award is a great acknowledgement of the success of our efforts."
