Diversity Awareness and Sensitivity are not Enough by Mary Winters
DiversityBusiness.com Article/- Almost every major corporate, education, not-for-profit and government organization has or is in the process of conducting diversity training. But is it any good? Does it achieve the desired objectives? There are a lot of naysayers who would assert that diversity training is a waste of time and money.

There is no doubt that “Diversity and Inclusion” are key concepts in today’s organizations. “Diversity” can be viewed as the mix of people in the organization, number of women, number of African Americans in management, the number and types of differently abled people, different generations, different functional specialties and myriad other mixes within the organization, etc. “Inclusion” is how the mix works together to achieve organizational goals. People need to feel respected and valued for their contributions with the ability to bring their whole selves to work to achieve their full potential. Is the organization addressing the needs of their diverse customers, clients and other stakeholders?

  • Diversity learning should be integrated, ongoing, relevant, applicable, and based on a solid needs assessment.

  • Diversity is a competency and as such the learning should be based on building blocks that start with elementary concepts before moving to more complex and controversial topics.

  • Diversity learning should not just happen in the classroom but rather should be integrated into other business processes and activities.

In the next installment of Inclusion Works, we will introduce a very effective tool for assessing cultural competence.
